In accordance with our procedure, any patient that has a manual chair can get an electric or power chair at NO COST if they qualify. To qualify, Medicare must be the primary insurance or have private insurance as a Primary. The patients medical doctor must sign a certificate of medical necessity verifying the patients medical need for the chair.
If a patient has a manual wheelchair that is still being rented through Medicare, we would, as the supplier would have to take the chair back to the original supplier of that chair. The company would then give us a pick up ticket or the patient would then be submitted to with our paperwork to Medicare. If the wheelchair is not being rented through Medicare any longer the patient may keep his/her wheelchair.
If a patient has an electric wheelchair or power chair, they may usually receive a new chair at NO COST if they qualify. To qualify Medicare must be the Primary insurance or have Private insurance as Primary. If a patient has a motorized wheelchair that has been reported stolen or the motorized wheelchair or the wheelchair has been deemed as non-repairable by a medical equipment supplier other than our company.
The supplier must fill out a repair estimate in order for a patient to receive another motorized wheelchair. We must have the Make, Model and Serial number and the actual date of original delivery of that chair so that we can proceed to process a new chair for them. Medicare picks up 80% of the chair and the secondary insurance company, if the patient has one, picks up the remaining 20%. The chair is 100% covered. If the patient does not have a secondary insurance we have what is called a financial hardship waiver which from the patient for their new chair.
